Oxiracetam explained
Oxiracetam is a racetam with an added hydroxyl group, developed by ISF in Italy in the 1970s. It’s water-soluble, unlike aniracetam.
It’s sold as a prescription drug in some countries.
Mechanism of action
Racetams don’t bind one receptor strongly. Most of the evidence points to positive modulation of AMPA glutamate receptors and better acetylcholine use in the hippocampus, which are both tied to memory formation.
Effects in animals are clearest in deficit models, such as after scopolamine or aging, and much smaller in healthy animals.
