Description
Our Elderberry Sambucus is a black elderberry extract (anthocyanins), supplied for lab research. Every batch is tested for 99% purity or better, and it’s sold for laboratory research only.
About Elderberry Sambucus
Black elderberry is the fruit of Sambucus nigra, a shrub from Europe. Our tablets use an extract standardized to 5% anthocyanins.
The anthocyanins give the berries their dark purple color.
Mechanism of action
Elderberry anthocyanins are antioxidants, and in lab tests the extract blocked influenza virus from entering cells. It also affects cytokine production.
Raw berries contain compounds that need processing to remove, which is why extracts are used.
Elderberry Sambucus research
Tiralongo and colleagues reported in 2016 that elderberry extract shortened colds in air travelers. A 2019 meta-analysis by Hawkins found it reduced upper respiratory symptoms.
Most trials are small.

Using Elderberry Sambucus in the lab
Plant extracts contain many compounds, so a common design compares the whole extract with its main isolated compound to see which effects come from which.
Write the extract ratio or standardization into your methods. It’s the detail reviewers ask about first.
Keep a retained sample of the batch you used. If you need to check a result later, you’ll have the same material to test.

How we test each batch
Every batch is tested before it goes on sale. Identity is checked by mass spectrometry, and purity by HPLC, with a target of 99% or higher.
Each container is labeled with the product, the amount and the batch number. Email us that number and we’ll send the certificate of analysis for your batch.
Storage and shelf life
Store capsules, tablets and powder in a cool, dry place out of direct light, with the lid closed tight. Write the date you opened or mixed it on the label, so anyone else in the lab knows how old it is.
Working with it safely
Wear gloves and eye protection when you open or measure it, and work on a clean surface.
Label everything you prepare, keep it away from food areas, and follow your lab’s rules for disposing of sharps and chemical waste.
