SAM-e explained
SAM-e (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) is made from methionine and ATP and is the main methyl donor in cells. It’s sold here as the disulfate tosylate salt.
It’s a prescription drug in some European countries.
Mechanism of action
SAM-e donates methyl groups to DNA, proteins, neurotransmitters and phospholipids, then becomes homocysteine. It’s needed to make serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
It also feeds the pathway that makes glutathione in the liver.
SAM-e research
Papakostas and colleagues reported in 2010 that SAM-e added to antidepressants helped some non-responders.
