What is PP-405?

PP-405 is a small-molecule compound from Pelage Pharmaceuticals, a UCLA spin-out, developed for hair loss as a topical treatment.

How it acts in research models

PP-405 is described as an inhibitor of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier, which pushes follicle stem cells to burn glucose through glycolysis and make lactate. That metabolic shift appears to restart the growth phase.

It’s a new approach that doesn’t act on hormones.

Published PP-405 research

The UCLA research behind it, led by William Lowry and Heather Christofk, reported that switching hair follicle stem cells toward lactate production woke them from rest in mice.

Pelage reported early clinical data in 2025, and larger trials are still ahead.
