What is Dermorphin?

Dermorphin is a seven-amino-acid opioid peptide first isolated from the skin of South American Phyllomedusa frogs. It contains a D-alanine, unusual in animal peptides.

It’s a strong, selective mu-opioid receptor agonist and is controlled in many jurisdictions.

How it acts in research models

Dermorphin is a very selective and potent mu-opioid receptor agonist. Its D-alanine at position 2 protects it from enzymes and is needed for its activity.

It’s many times more potent than morphine in animal tests, which is why it’s controlled in horse racing.

It was described by Erspamer’s group in 1981. Animal studies report potency far higher than morphine when given directly into the central nervous system.
