About 11-OXO

11-OXO is the trade name for adrenosterone, a steroid made in small amounts by the adrenal glands. It was first isolated in 1936 by Tadeus Reichstein.

It’s on the WADA prohibited list.

How it works

Adrenosterone is a substrate and inhibitor of 11-beta-HSD1, the enzyme that turns inactive cortisone into active cortisol in fat and liver. Lowering that conversion reduces local cortisol.

It’s also converted to 11-oxygenated androgens, which bind the androgen receptor.

11-OXO research

Research on adrenosterone covers its conversion into 11-keto-testosterone and its effect on the cortisol-cortisone balance through the enzyme 11-beta-HSD1.

Brooker and colleagues described its urinary metabolites for anti-doping work in 2009.
