What is 7-Keto DHEA?

7-Keto DHEA is 3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone, a natural metabolite of DHEA. Unlike DHEA, it isn’t turned into testosterone or estrogen.

It was developed and patented by Humanetics in the 1990s.

How it acts in research models

7-Keto is thought to raise activity of thermogenic enzymes in the liver, such as glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme. That would increase heat production without the hormone effects of DHEA.

Its 7-oxo group is what stops conversion to sex hormones.

What studies say about 7-Keto DHEA

Small studies reported changes in resting metabolic rate and body weight, including a 2000 trial by Kalman and colleagues. Other work looked at thermogenesis and immune function.

Using 7-Keto DHEA in the lab

Labs studying the HPG axis usually take a baseline hormone panel, then repeat it at fixed points during and after exposure. That makes recovery curves easy to compare between compounds.

Estradiol assays vary a lot in accuracy at low levels, so use a sensitive method if estrogen suppression is the endpoint.
