6-OXO explained

6-OXO is the trade name for androst-4-ene-3,6,17-trione, a steroid that permanently blocks aromatase. It was sold in sports supplements in the 2000s and is now on the WADA prohibited list.

It’s sold here as tablets and as a liquid.

Mechanism of action

6-OXO binds aromatase, the enzyme that turns androgens into estrogens, and inactivates it for good. With less estrogen made, the pituitary releases more LH and testosterone rises.

Because the block is permanent, recovery depends on the body making new enzyme.

6-OXO research

Rohle and colleagues reported in 2007 that androstenetrione raised free testosterone and lowered estrogen ratios in men over three weeks.

Using 6-OXO in the lab

Research on hormone support compounds usually measures LH, FSH, testosterone, estradiol and SHBG, often during recovery after androgen exposure. Timing of blood draws matters because these hormones change through the day.

Aromatase inhibitors, SERMs and gonadotropin-type compounds act at different points in the hormone axis, so studies often compare them directly.

A typical panel covers total and free testosterone, LH, FSH, estradiol, SHBG and prolactin, with lipids and liver enzymes for safety. Fertility studies add sperm counts.

Measuring the liquid

At 33mg per mL, every 1mL holds 33mg and every 0.1mL holds 3.3mg. A graduated 1mL dropper or syringe makes those measures accurate.
