Using Bacteriostatic Water in the lab
Reconstitution liquids and solvents are the part of a protocol that’s easy to overlook. The wrong liquid can stop a peptide dissolving, change its stability or interfere with an assay.
Match the liquid to the compound and to how long you’ll keep the solution. Single-use work can use sterile water, while multi-draw vials need a preservative.
Record the lot number of every liquid you use, along with the date you opened it. If a batch of results looks odd, the diluent is one of the first things to rule out.
Bacteriostatic Water at a glance
- Options: 3 sizes and forms
- Use: laboratory research only
Storage and shelf life
Store solvents tightly capped at room temperature, away from heat, flames and direct light. Note the batch number and the date you opened it in your lab records.
Our reconstitution and solvent range
Different compounds need different liquids. Here’s how our range lines up:
- Bacteriostatic Water (this page): the default for most peptides, with 0.9% benzyl alcohol so a vial can be drawn from for several weeks
- Sterile Water: no preservative, for single-use mixing or assays where benzyl alcohol would interfere
- Acetic Acid Reconstitution Solution: dilute acid for peptides that dissolve poorly in water, such as IGF-1 LR3
- Phosphate Buffered Solution: holds the pH near 7.4 for dilutions and cell work
- L-Glutathione Reconstitution Solution: adds an antioxidant for peptides prone to oxidation
- Reconstitution Solution: a general-purpose sterile diluent for the shelf
- DMSO Dimethyl Sulfoxide: a strong solvent for stock solutions of compounds that won’t dissolve in water
- Benzyl Alcohol USP Grade: preservative and co-solvent for oil-based solutions
- Grape Seed Oil 100% Filtered: a light carrier oil for fat-soluble compounds
Safe handling
Wear gloves and eye protection, work in a ventilated area, and keep flammable solvents away from heat and open flames. Close the bottle after each use.
Related products
- Benzyl Alcohol USP Grade: Benzyl alcohol is a simple aromatic alcohol used as a preservative and solvent.
- Polyethylene Glycol 400 (PEG 400): Polyethylene glycol 400 is a low-molecular-weight PEG, a clear, slightly thick liquid.
- Phosphate Buffered Solution: Phosphate buffered solution is salt water with sodium and potassium phosphate added to hold the pH near 7.4, close to body fluid.
- Denatured Ethanol 99.5%: This is 99.5% ethanol with a denaturant added so it can’t be drunk.
- Cotton Seed Oil: Cotton seed oil is pressed from cotton plant seeds and refined.

How it compares
Denatured Ethanol 99.5%: This is 99.5% ethanol with a denaturant added so it can’t be drunk. It’s a lab solvent and cleaning agent.
Sterile Water: Sterile water is purified water that has been sterilized and sealed in a vial. It has no preservative, so once the stopper is pierced it’s meant for a single use.
L-Glutathione Reconstitution Solution: This is a sterile 10mL solution with L-glutathione added, made for reconstituting peptides where an antioxidant in the liquid helps.
Acetic Acid Reconstitution Solution: This is sterile dilute acetic acid, offered at 0.5% and 0.6%, in 10mL vials. Some peptides dissolve poorly in plain water and need a slightly acidic solution.
