5-Hydroxytryptophan is the direct precursor of serotonin. The body makes it from tryptophan, and it’s also extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds.

It crosses the blood-brain barrier, unlike serotonin.

How it acts in research models

5-HTP is converted to serotonin by aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase in serotonin neurons. Unlike tryptophan, it skips the rate-limiting enzyme, so supply turns into serotonin more directly.

Some of it is also converted outside the brain, which is why it’s sometimes paired with a decarboxylase blocker in studies.
