About Diiodo-L-Thyronine

3,5-Diiodo-L-thyronine, or T2, is a natural metabolite of thyroid hormone with two iodine atoms instead of three or four. For a long time it was thought to be inactive.

Research since the 1990s, mostly from Italian groups, has shown it has metabolic effects of its own.

How it acts in research models

T2 acts directly on mitochondria, raising their energy use, and it also binds thyroid hormone receptors weakly. Its fast effects on metabolic rate seem to come from the mitochondrial action.

At high levels it can still suppress TSH, so the thyroid axis should be monitored in any study.

What studies say about Diiodo-L-Thyronine

Lanni, Goglia and colleagues reported in 2005 (FASEB Journal) that T2 raised metabolic rate and prevented weight gain in rats on a high-fat diet, without the heart effects seen with T3.

Human data are limited.
